This section provides guidance on infant feeding, safe baby care, and essential items for your little one's first year.
Infant Feeding: Formula Options and Practices
While breastfeeding is often recommended, infant formula provides a safe and nutritious alternative or supplement when breastfeeding is not possible or chosen.
-
If needed, choosing Infant formula:
- Mother’s milk is best for your baby but depending upon your situation, you may need additional support.
- Cow's Milk-Based Formulas: Most common, processed to be digestible for infants.
- Soy-Based Formulas: An option for babies with cow's milk protein allergy or lactose intolerance (consult your pediatrician).
- Specialty Formulas: For specific needs like acid reflux or severe allergies, always under medical guidance.
-
No-no list
- Always make sure that infant formula that you may use does not contain Palm Olein Oil, Maltodextrin, Fructose, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Table Sugar (or sucrose), and Vegetable Seed Oils
- Maltodextrin: It weakens the immune system and increases the risk of gut related illnesses. It is also called INS 1400.
- Palm Olein Oil: It reduces calcium absorption and lowers bone mineralization
- Table Sugar (Sucrose), Fructose, and Non-Lactose Sugar: It can upset digestion, harm gut health, and make babies prefer overly sweet foods later in life. These are also called as INS 420, 1700
- Corn Syrup, High Fructose Corn Syrup, and Corn Solids: It is linked with obesity, insulin resistance and metabolic disorders later in life. Linked to poor metabolic health and higher obesity risk later in life. These are also called as INS 969, 420
- Heavy Metals: It harms brain development and impair growth
- Hexane Oils: It may lead to neurological damage in growing infants
-
Preparation and Storage:
- Always follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully for mixing and sterilizing bottles.
- Prepare formula with clean water.
- Discard any unused formula left in the bottle after one hour, or as per formula guidelines.
- Store prepared formula in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
-
Feeding Schedule:
- Newborns typically feed every 2-3 hours.
- Watch for hunger cues like rooting, sucking motions, and fussiness.
- Feed on demand, allowing your baby to guide the frequency and amount.
Toxin-Free Baby Care: Prioritizing Your Baby's Health
A baby's skin is delicate and highly absorbent, making toxin-free baby care products essential to avoid potential irritants and harmful chemicals.
-
Bathing:
- Use lukewarm water and a soft washcloth.
- Choose gentle, fragrance-free, tear-free, and paraben-free baby washes and shampoos.
- Limit bath time to 5-10 minutes to prevent skin dryness.
-
Diapering:
- Change diapers frequently to prevent diaper rash.
- Clean the diaper area gently with water or toxin-free wipes.
- Use a zinc oxide-based or petroleum-free diaper cream if needed.
-
Moisturizing:
- Apply a gentle, hypoallergenic, and fragrance-free baby lotion or oil after bathing to keep skin hydrated.
-
Laundry:
- Wash baby clothes and bedding separately using a mild, dye-free, and fragrance-free detergent.
